"Baza Sztuki - Art Base On the Net" (a tentative name) is a multi-stage project whose main objective is to create a growing environment of internet resources concerning selected fields of contemporary art. It also aims at building an awareness of the tradition of conceptual art that is widely lacking in cultural and public life. Polish online resources on contemporary art that would be available both in Poland as well as abroad are very poor. Access to source documents is also difficult due to their relatively scarcity. This applies equally to Polish as well as to foreign researchers, scientists, students as well as persons interested in contemporary art. The project's starting point are several existing private archival collections that gather documents, objects, and publications on selected artistic currents or art genres. Many of these collections are stored by private individuals who are willing to make them available to the public. Included are (so far) archives of Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Piotr Rypson. In preparation are the archives of Edward Krasinski and Stanislaw Drózdz.
Focusing on selected archives documenting specific artistic currents and their presence in the Polish artistic life will also make it possible to present their relations with similar trends in Europe and the US. An online archive will create an environment for studying and researching the trends and individual artistic styles since the 1960s until the present, and of the intensity, or lack, of artistic dialogue in the various fields of art.
The selected archives will make it possible to create a comprehensive, albeit obviously not complete, collection of documents, publications, research works, and critical texts on fields such as conceptual art, concrete poetry, experimental literature, networking in art, and the activity of some of Poland's art galleries (the so called author's galleries), etc.
The project is aimed at gradually expanding the scope of research and archive creation, by expanding the list of archives subject to archivisation, and for broadening the co-operation with institutions involved in similar work.
The digital data base created will finally be handed over to the Warsaw University Library. Making the programme a part of the Library's curriculum could in the future become a basis for developing the collection and making it available to researchers.
